Craig Hetherington vanished in 2003 following a night out in Middlesbrough, England. Despite numerous appeals, he hasn’t been seen since.
The case took a bizarre turn in 2007, when Craig’s mother Sandra says she saw him on TV. Unfortunately, this failed to result in a positive update.
This article reviews this case. There is a reader’s poll at the end of the article, which you can vote on. We can then see what the overall belief is as to what happened to Craig.

Background
Craig Hetherington was aged 22 at the time of his disappearance. He was studying Chemical Engineering at Teesside University at the time.
He lived with his mother Sandra Flintoft at the time of his disappearance. The duo had a strong relationship.
The Disappearance
On Friday 21st February 2003, Craig handed an assignment in and then went to his job – where he worked as a barman – for a few hours.
Following this, Craig returned home. Craig was on his way out, but as many a loving mother does, Sandra asked him if he had eaten yet. They agreed that Sandra would save Craig a piece of Lasagne, which he could microwave upon his return.
Craig went to Middlesbrough for a night out with friends. By all accounts, he was enjoying his night and was enjoying some downtime away from the pressures of studying.
However, he would vanish during the course of the night. The last confirmed sighting was at 1am, outside The Cornerhouse nightclub. Craig left to get a taxi, but appeared to vanish.
Sandra woke up the next morning – and there was no sign of Craig. Initially she wasn’t worried, as she thought that Craig was just at a friend’s house. However, once several hours passed, the Police were contacted.
The Investigation
Craig was reported as missing, and the Police carried out an investigation. Crucially, the first few days passed without the Police being able to find any sign of Craig.
Craig didn’t go to the pub where he worked to collect his wages. This was very out of character, and seemed to confirm the belief that he was missing.
The Police didn’t arrest anyone, and they did not believe that there was any foul play involved. Instead, the general belief was that Craig may have fallen into the nearby River Tees.
The banks of the River Tees were searched, with the Police believing it was plausible that Craig could’ve fallen in – given that he may have been under the influence of alcohol, and that the Cornerhouse nightclub was about a 15-minute walk away from the river.
However, Craig’s friends said that he was not drunk when he left. They also stated that he showed no indication that he was planning to disappear, nor was he behaving out of character.
Local pubs and clubs were searched, while CCTV was scoured. Derelict buildings were searched in, along with local beauty spots. But unfortunately, these failed to yield anything.
Taxi drivers and firms were contacted, but no one appeared to recognise Craig, nor were there any records to suggest he got into a taxi.
The Police monitored Craig’s bank account, although it was not accessed, nor was there any activity – following his disappearance.
As the weeks went by, there were a lack of updates on the situation. Eventually, with no solid leads in place, the investigation was scaled down.
Later Developments
As a way of raising awareness, pictures of Craig appeared on milk cartons nationwide in 2004. Therefore, people were well aware of him – both locally and nationally.
One lady in Manchester contacted the Police to say – after seeing Craig’s face on a milk carton – that she thought she knew where he was. Unfortunately, this was followed up, but it was not Craig.
An unexpected development came in 2007, when Sandra says that she believes she saw him in a BBC News report about weather.
In the report, there was a focus on the terrible weather conditions in Leeds, England. During the report, three men standing in deep water were shown. Sandra believes that one of these men was Craig.
This has never been proven or disproven. The Police took this seriously, and attempted to track down the man. Unfortunately, the Police were unable to do so. It isn’t known if this is a true sighting.
Leeds is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes away from Middlesbrough. Therefore, it is feasible that Craig may have been living in this area.
For Sandra, this was a key moment. She said the sighting was “surreal and quite emotional”. This gave her renewed hope that Craig may one day return.
In 2023, she sadly said that the thought that she may never see him again makes her “sadder every day”. With each passing day, it is becoming increasingly unlikely that Craig will return.
Hetherington appeared in the 2023 British TV show Vanished. Whilst this brought awareness of the case to a wider audience, it failed to provide any significant leads.
Sandra has fought to keep Craig in the public eye. Unfortunately though, Craig’s whereabouts remain unknown.
Theories
So what happened to Craig Hetherington? A few theories have been put forward, but there are an alarming lack of leads to go on.
We take a look at the evidence for some theories:
Theory One: Craig Hetherington was the victim of foul play
For someone to completely vanish, it will often involve a form of foul play. Perhaps Craig was in the wrong place at the wrong time, or was robbed.
It is also possible that something else happened to Craig – such as him being accidentally ran over. Perhaps his body was disposed of? But due to how busy it was in the town centre at the time, this would be unlikely.
It is also possible that Craig got into a taxi with someone that wished to do harm to him. There are a few different ways that he may have become the victim of foul play.
However, the Police did not find any evidence of this. Craig was also known for being a calming and level-headed person, making it unlikely that he would’ve found himself in any sort of fight.
Theory Two: Craig Hetherington accidentally drowned
For many, the most logical suggestion is that Craig accidentally drowned. While he was supposed to be getting a taxi with his friends, he might have decided to go and find somewhere else to eat, or visit a convenience store, away from the town centre.
With this in mind, perhaps Craig accidentally fell into the River Tees. This was about 15 minutes away by foot. Especially with it being dark, it is possible that Craig became disoriented and tragically fell into the water and drowned.
This theory could explain why Craig was never found – as his body may have swept away. While it may not be unlikely that his body was never found, it is plausible.
Detractors of this theory point to how the banks were searched, but there was no sight of Craig. Nor did his body ever wash ashore anywhere else.
Theory Three: Craig Hetherington intentionally disappeared
A third theory is that Craig intentionally disappeared. Could he have wanted to start a new life? While this is unlikely, it is possible.
This would explain why Craig was never found. Moreover, it could also explain the potential sighting of Craig on the news – though this wasn’t ever verified.
Craig could have intentionally vanished, but it would be incredibly difficult to not reappear and see his loved ones – especially given how he was close to his mother. Furthermore, his face was also well-known due to the appeals – so it is unlikely he would have been able to evade being found.
