In January 2001, Frederick ‘Lil Joe’ Boehm vanished from Marshall, Texas. He was just 23 at the time.
Boehm vanished after leaving a house suddenly following a phone call, resulting in many unanswered questions. His whereabouts remain unknown.
This article reviews this disappearance. In order to see the consensus among our loyal readers as to what happened – there is a poll at the end of the article, which we would love you to vote on.

Background
Frederick Boehm was born in April 1977. He grew up in Marshall, Texas as one of four children, and was affectionately known as ‘Lil Joe’.
The eldest sibling was Cartha, followed by Jesse, Jolene, and then Frederick – who was referred to from a young age as Joe.
Tragically, both of Boehm’s parents passed away during the 1990s. At the time of his disappearance, he was living at the house of a friend – Coley Briggs.
Boehm was taking antidepressant medication at the time of his disappearance. Additionally, it is known he suffered from temporary blackouts.
The Disappearance
On the evening of 25th January 2001, Boehm was at the Briggs’ residence. Briggs, his family, and girlfriend were also present at the time.
Like any other evening, Boehm was ready to go to sleep. However, the house phone rang at some point between 11pm and 12am.
A family member answered the call. The mystery caller asked for Boehm. Boehm then spoke to the caller – though the contents of this call are unknown.
Following the call, Boehm changed his clothes and left the house. On his way out he told Briggs’ girlfriend that he would be back in the morning.
The girlfriend would later reveal that Boehm was carrying a gun when he left, but appeared to be calm. He was last seen heading in the direction of the town centre of Marshall on foot.
What happened over the next few hours remains unknown. What is known is that the next day, Boehm didn’t return as expected.
Days passed and still there was no sign of Boehm. It took until 3rd February – over a week after he was last seen – for Boehm’s disappearance to be reported to the Police.
Briggs had called Boehm’s siter Jolene Oney to ask if he knew where Boehm was. After both realised neither had seen Boehm in over a week, Jolene filed a missing persons report later that day.
The Investigation
Due to there being over a week between Boehm’s last sighting and the Police being made aware of his disappearance, investigators were on the backfoot from the outset.
Flyers were distributed, posters erected, and appeals were made on local TV and radio stations. Boehm’s face became rather recognisable in the local area.
After hearing the accounts of the disappearance, investigators were keen to find out more about the unexpected phone call. However, investigators were unable to trace the caller.
Two Marshall residents came forward around a week following the reporting of Boehm’s disappearance to say they had seen a man matching Boehm’s physical description walking around different parts of the city of Marshall. Unfortunately, these sightings were never confirmed.
In the meantime, Oney was carrying out her own investigation. Oney searched the city of Marshall, along with wooded areas around the city.
Oney visited a psychic to try and find out more about Boehm’s whereabouts. Unfortunately, this didn’t result in any leads.
The Police were unfortunately unable to make any progress on the case. It seemed as if Boehm had just vanished.
There had been suggestions that Boehm had been involved with drugs – though the family dispute this. Investigators theorised that he may have been killed over a drug-related debt.
For Boehm’s family, this was seen as a convenient conclusion, and one that was not based on evidence. Additionally, Boehm left behind thousands of dollars in his bank account, suggesting that there may not have been any debt involved.
The Police did question local drug dealers and informants, but there were no leads. Unfortunately, investigators found it very challenging to make any progress.
The weeks, months, and then years passed. Boehm’s case was eventually declared cold. While investigators remain open to any tips, they are not actively investigating the case.
Later Developments
Unfortunately, despite so many years passing since Boehm vanished, there have been no answers to all of the mysteries of this case.
Efforts to raise awareness and ultimately find Boehm have remained in the years since his disappearance.
Boehm’s sister Jolene Oney has been at the forefront of efforts. She has spoken of how she has searched every face on roads, and looked at every homeless person she sees – just in case Boehm is among them.
Oney has criticised the Police response to Boehm’s disappearance. In an interview with KTBS, Oney mentioned how she hasn’t heard from the Police in many years. She said she has been “ignored and treated so disrespectfully” by them.
Oney has been very dedicated in trying to find her brother. She also spearheads a campaign page on Facebook called Lil’ Joe Boehm, Where are you?, which publicises the case and provides updates.
Boehm’s cousin Brandy Vanschoyck has said that they believe Boehm is dead, but is in an unmarked grave somewhere. Brandy says they would like to recover his body to pay their respects.
Boehm’s whereabouts remain unknown to this day. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Texas Attorney General Cold Case and Missing Persons Unit via 512-936-0752.
Theories
A few different theories have been put forward to explain the disappearance of Boehm. But these are purely theories, as there is no clear evidence.
We take a look at a few different theories:
Theory One: Frederick Boehm was the victim of foul play
The most common belief is that Boehm was sadly murdered by someone or a group of people. Perhaps it was due to a grudge, or a targeted attack.
One potential suggestion is that it was drug debt-related, although Boehm’s family have disputed that he was ever involved in anything beyond minor recreational use.
The phone call is clearly a key part of the case. For Boehm to suddenly leave the house – and to leave with a gun – suggests that he was heading into an urgent, and potentially dangerous, situation.
Unfortunately, he may have been murdered. Then, his body may have been disposed of. Due to Boehm not being reported as missing for over a week, it would’ve given his murderer(s) plenty of time to get rid of his body.
However, while some have proposed he was in debt to someone, he left thousands of dollars behind in his account – suggesting that this may not be the case.
Additionally, he told Briggs’ girlfriend that he’d be back in the morning, suggesting that he wasn’t going somewhere dangerous. Although the gun may suggest otherwise.
Many suggest that Boehm was the victim of foul play. While this is a broad theory, it could cover many explanations – sadly none of which would be positive.
Theory Two: Frederick Boehm was killed in an accident
Another possibility is that Boehm was killed in an accident – such as falling from a height or being hit by a car. For those that don’t support the foul play theory, this is a common belief.
It is feasible that Boehm died in an accident. At that time of night, he may have been hit by someone. The person may have panicked and buried Boehm’s body somewhere.
Additionally, he could have fallen from height. But it is doubtful that his body would not have been found after so many years. But still, it is a potential theory.
Theory Three: Frederick Boehm took his own life
Boehm going out into the night with a gun presents the possibility that he tragically took his own life. Perhaps he received bad news on the phone call that led him to spiral into despair.
Boehm was on antidepressant medication – suggesting he had mental health problems. Mental health problems are often associated with suicidal behaviour.
But Boehm did tell Briggs’ girlfriend that he’d be back in the morning – seemingly suggesting he wasn’t planning on doing anything to end his life.
Additionally, it is highly unlikely that his body wouldn’t have been located in all of this time. Moreover, prior to the phone call, Boehm appeared to be ready to sleep. But once again, this theory is a possibility.
Theory Four: Frederick Boehm intentionally vanished
Another theory is that Boehm vanished intentionally. It seems unlikely that he would leave so suddenly and never come back, but it isn’t impossible.
It is known he was on antidepressant medication, so he was most likely not enjoying his current life. Boehm may have wanted a fresh start and took the opportunity to leave.
His sister Jolene has spoken of how she always looks at homeless people – just in case her brother is among them.
But the timing would be bizarre. Additionally, it is unlikely that he would not ever make contact with his family or friends again.
Due to his picture being on billboards, posters, and flyers, his face is very well-known, suggesting that if he was alive and living in a different area, the public would recognise him and alert the authorities.
