He disappeared while walking towards his former school in order to meet a colleague to go to work. His disappearance has puzzled many.

Background
Jason Jolkowski was born in June 1981, and lived with his parents in Omaha, Nebraska, United States.
He had a part time job at a restaurant, and studied at a local community college. Jason was rather quiet, but was well-liked.
The Disappearance
Jason had been called into work early. His workplace was approximately four and a half miles away. Normally, he’d drive there, but his car was being repaired at the time.
Jason instead arranged to meet his colleague at the high school that they had both attended. The school was approximately half a mile from his home.
Half a mile typically takes around 10-15 minutes to walk. He set off, and was spotted at 10:45am by a neighbour. Judging by this, the latest he should’ve made it to the school was 11am.
However, Jason didn’t show up at the school. Therefore, his co-worker called the Jolkowski residence to ask where Jason was. When he was told that he had left for the school, there was significant confusion.
His parents started looking for Jason in the local area. It seemed very bizarre that he hadn’t made it to the school, despite it being so close.
Within 24 hours, after Jason failed to return home or show up to work, he was reported as missing to the Police.
The Investigation
Unfortunately, the Police were slow to begin searching. This was due to them initially believing that Jason was a runaway.
The Police carried out a search of the local area. They reviewed the school’s CCTV, which confirmed that at no point did Jason make it to the school’s grounds.
The Police interviewed known sex offenders in the area, with some believing that an abduction had taken place. But these interviews failed to result in any advancements in the case.
The case became notorious for a severe lack of clues. The Police were unable to gather any evidence of what happened to Jason.
No personal belongings were found in the area, despite searches. It truly was as if Jason had vanished into thin air.
The Police were left very confused, with Jason vanishing in a busy area. No one seemed to see anything happen, which made it even more baffling.
Unfortunately, the Police were unable to find any evidence of what happened to Jason, and the investigation was slowly scaled down.
Later Developments
This is an incredibly baffling case. Jason’s disappearance remains a mystery, with there being no evidence to go on.
Perhaps the biggest legacy of this case is Jason’s Law. Jason’s Law refers to a Nebraska-wide database of missing people in the state of Nebraska, which Jason’s parents campaigned for.
Jason’s mother Kelly has made several appearances on podcasts to try and raise awareness of Jason’s case. She has received praise for her efforts in helping the families of missing people.
In 2011, a plaque featuring Jason’s name was placed on a walking trail that Jason and his family had enjoyed walking on.
In 2021, a fresh appeal was made in line with the 20th anniversary of the disappearance. As of 2024, the Omaha Police continues to keep Jason’s case open, though the chances of a breakthrough remain small. Jason’s whereabouts remain unknown.
Theories
The lack of evidence means that it is very challenging to put any compelling theories forward. The theories are purely based on assumptions.
We take a look at a few different theories:
Theory One: Jason Jolkowski was killed in a hit and run
One theory is that Jason was mowed down in an accidental hit and run on his way to work. While it was a short walk, it would have just taken a second for him to be hit.
The roads were quite busy, so Jason might have walked across a road from one side to another, only to be unfortunately hit by a car.
The motorist may have panicked and quickly took Jason’s body, before disposing of it at a later point. It would at least explain why no body has ever been found.
However, as discussed, the roads were relatively busy, making it unlikely that someone could hit someone and then bundle their body into their car without someone seeing it.
Theory Two: Jason Jolkowski was abducted and later killed
A common theory is that Jason was lured into a car by someone, or that he was suddenly bundled into a car and abducted.
But with it being such a short walk from his house to the school, it is unlikely that Jason would’ve got into a stranger’s car to get a lift.
If he was abducted by someone, he would’ve been taken quickly, as no one saw any sort of abduction take place. Therefore, there might have been more than one person involved. Or he may have been forced into a car at gunpoint.
Therefore, this theory points towards an acquaintance of Jason’s. Perhaps Jason got into the car of someone he knew, only for him to be abducted.
With this theory, it is likely that Jason tragically would have been murdered, with his body disposed of. This would explain why no body has ever been found.
But Jason was over 6 foot – making him an unlikely abduction victim. It could also be questioned if an involuntary abduction could be feasible without anyone seeing anything.
Theory Three: Jason Jolkowski disappeared intentionally
The Police initially followed the theory that Jason had disappeared intentionally as a runaway. Perhaps he wanted a new life – and he set about doing so.
While unlikely, it is possible that Jason is still alive to this day, but just living somewhere else. But it would be strange for him to never make contact with his family.
Moreover, intentional disappearances are rare, and normally well planned out in advance. Jason though made plans to get to work, so it would be strange for him to change this plan in an instant and enact a plan to intentionally disappear.
Jason had a strong relationship with his parents, so it seems unlikely that he would runaway from this life. He had no history of running away either.
