In 2008, 21 year old American Skye Budnick took a one-way flight to Japan. What happened next remains shrouded in mystery.
Skye didn’t make anyone aware of her plans and had never visited the Asian nation before. Her disappearance has led to many years of confusion over what happened.
This article reviews this disappearance. There is a reader’s poll at the end of the article, which we encourage you to vote on. This will present a picture of what our readers believe the most plausible theory is.

Background
Skye Budnick was from Connecticut, United States. She was described as being shy, quiet, and as being a big fan of Japanese culture.
Skye was studying Japanese and International Business at Central Connecticut State University at the time of her disappearance.
The Disappearance
On 31st March 2008, Skye – seemingly out of nowhere – left her home. Skye did not let anyone know about her plans – including her friends or her family.
All that was known was that Skye had taken her car. It would later transpire that Skye had booked a one-way plane ticket to Hokkaido, Japan.
It is known that she made it to Hokkaido as planned. What happened over the next few days isn’t entirely clear. She was last seen in the small town of Noboribetsu on 7th April 2008.
Noboribetsu was about 230 kilometres from Hokkaido. It is therefore believed that Skye travelled around Hokkaido for a few days, before making her way to Noboribetsu.
She was last seen in this town by an innkeeper at an inn. The innkeeper spoke to Skye, and reported that she had told him that she planned on visiting the city of Sapporo – about 120 kilometres away. This was the final confirmed sighting of Skye.
An unfortunate set of events and circumstances meant that Skye’s lack of presence was not noticed for a few days. To begin with, on the night she disappeared, her mother Susan presumed that she was staying over a friend’s house.
On 1st April, her sister Megan fell ill during a work shift. Her family took her to hospital, and understandably – Megan was the source of the family’s focus. Over the next couple of days, Megan was nursed back to health.
It took until 4th April for the Budnick family to realise that no one had heard from Skye for almost four days.
The family had tried to give Skye space due to her finding her feet at college. She was said to have been an outsider at school, but due to her finding some friends who had a shared love for Japanese culture, the family were keen on letting her have space.
A third unfortunate circumstance was that Skye didn’t have her phone with her. This made getting in touch with her very difficult.
In an effort to find out where Skye was, her brother accessed her emails. There, they found a flight itinerary for an April 1st flight to Japan – which by this point was three days ago.
This shocked and worried the Budnick family. They quickly went to the airport, where they found Skye’s car. After being unable to contact her, they realised she was missing.
The Investigation
In most disappearances, reporting someone as missing involves them visiting their local law enforcement agency or police station. But this was an unusual situation – with Skye having travelled to a foreign country.
The itinerary stated that she was travelling to Hokkaido, Japan, with a layover in Tokyo. The family tried to make contact with the Japanese police, but due to not speaking any Japanese, communication was difficult. This was a time before Google Translate.
The Budnick family visited their local police department – the Southington Police Department. Efforts were then made to report her disappearance to the Japanese police. Again, the language barrier proved challenging, but the Police were able to make their Japanese counterparts aware.
Investigators were made aware of Skye speaking to the innkeeper. This gave the family more hope, as it seemed that she was alive and well. But after that, there was no sighting of Skye.
To try and maximise their chances of finding Skye, the Budnick family submitted DNA to the Connecticut State Forensic Laboratory. The DNA sample unfortunately never made it to Japan.
Both investigators and the Budnick family tried to find out why Skye had gone to Japan. They searched her email account further. They found an unsent email which appeared to be a suicide note that was addressed to a friend.
Skye was known to suffer from Clinical Depression. She had also discussed having suicidal thoughts. Therefore, there was a suggestion that Skye had gone to Japan to take her own life.
Susan and Megan travelled to Japan to file police reports, distribute flyers, and try to complete media interviews in an effort to raise awareness of the disappearance.
But a consistent problem throughout was the language barrier. Despite the family and the police department trying, they were unable to make any progress in finding Skye.
The Japanese media reported on the disappearance, but this failed to raise any leads. It appeared as if Skye had just vanished without a trace.
As the weeks went by, hope of finding Skye lessened. As with many other cases, the trail went cold and investigations into her disappearance by law enforcement agencies slowly wound down.
Later Developments
Unfortunately, in the years since Skye vanished, there has been very little in the way of developments. No new evidence has come to light.
The biggest update came in 2023. As mentioned earlier, the familial DNA sample did not make it to Japan as intended. But through the Southington Police, Interpol, and the Japanese Police, an agreement was reached for the family to submit a new DNA sample.
They had to visit Japan in-person to provide the DNA sample. In order to fund this trip, Skye’s sister Megan set up a GoFundMe page, which attracted over $16,000 in donations from 659 people.
Megan and Susan made it to Japan and handed over the DNA sample. They were hoping that a match could be found so that they could learn more about what had happened.
But in September 2024, Megan announced on social media that there were no matches. This led to more disappointment for the family, with Megan and Skye having spent 10 days in Japan.
Megan has used social media extensively. She has over 200k followers on TikTok, where she has raised awareness of Skye’s case on her account, under the username @meganlebron.
Megan has also created and hosted a podcast called Surviving Skye. Again, this has helped to raise awareness of Skye’s disappearance.
For the Budnick family, it is has been a very challenging experience. Her mother Susan has said that she believes that Skye may still be alive.
Susan has spoken of how difficult she continues to find life without Skye. Additionally, she says that she has taken up gardening to cope with her grief.
Skye was last seen on 7th April 2008 in Japan. Her whereabouts remain unknown to this day.
Theories
A few different theories have been put forward to suggest what might have happened to Skye Budnick. But there is not much evidence to work with.
We take a look at the evidence for each theory:
Theory One: Skye Budnick went to Japan to meet someone and later died
Some evidence suggests that Skye went to Japan to meet someone. She was known to use the internet and may have accessed chat rooms where she met people from Japan.
Unfortunately, she may have been lured to Japan by someone who knew she would be on her own and therefore vulnerable. At 21, she was still young and impressionable.
The fact that she only took a one-way trip suggests that she had no intention of coming back – perhaps she believed she was going to get into a relationship with this person and stay with them forever.
Something horrible may have happened to Skye. It may have resulted in her death. While this is a sad thought, it is a realistic theory, as it would explain why she was never seen again.
Theory Two: Skye Budnick went to Japan and took her own life
A common theory is that Skye tragically took her own life in Japan. This could explain why she wanted to keep her trip to Japan secret.
Some have proposed that due to her interest in Japan, that she saw this as a final thing to tick off her bucket list. Skye was known to be very interested in Japan, so may have felt that she wanted to visit the country before her death.
It is known that Skye suffered from Depression. Those with this condition are at a heightened risk of suicidal ideation. Moreover, the aforementioned draft email that looked like a suicide note adds further weight to this theory.
Japan’s Aokigahara forest is renowned for being an area where many people take their own lives. It is own for its isolated nature and its dense woodland. She may have tragically gone there.
With Skye also booking a one-way ticket, it doesn’t appear that she was intended upon coming back. From the facts we have available, this theory looks highly possible.
Theory Three: Skye Budnick went to Japan but remains alive
Arguably the best case scenario is that Skye remains alive to this day – and still living in Japan or another country.
She may have wanted to start a new life – as she wasn’t seemingly enjoying her current life. Due to her interest in Japan, she may have seen this as an ideal place to make a fresh start.
She might have met someone online and they may remain close to this day. Perhaps she is even happily married and continues to live her life.
This theory though does raise the question of why Skye would have never made contact with her family or friends again. Skye was close with her family and it would’ve been very difficult to last so long living without making contact with her family.
With the first two theories making a lot of sense, it is difficult to believe that this theory is accurate. But there is a chance it is true.
Theory Four: Skye Budnick joined a cult and cut off contact with her family
Another theory is that Skye joined a cult while in Japan. Japan had a big problem in the 2000s with cults.
Skye may have been vulnerable and in need of somewhere to stay. She could easily have become a member of a cult.
Most cults require followers to cease contact with family members. Therefore, Skye may have decided to join a cult in an effort to become part of a community – albeit at the cost of losing contact with her family.
If this theory is correct, then it is plausible that she remains alive to this day. But similar to the above – it would be difficult to live all of this time without making contact.

Unfortunately, the whereabouts of Skye Budnick remain unknown. It is a very bizarre disappearance – why would a 21 year old leave for a foreign country without telling anyone?
What happened to her remains a mystery. There is hope that one day she will return, but this appears to be unlikely.
